GLP-1 and How You Eat: Can Chewing and Slowing Down Boost Fullness Hormones?
GLP-1 is a gut hormone tied to appetite and fullness. Here's what peer-reviewed research says about how chewing well and eating slowly relate to your GLP-1 response.
GLP-1 has become a household name thanks to weight-loss medications — but it’s a hormone your body already releases naturally at every meal. And research suggests that how you eat, including how much you chew and how fast you go, is linked to how this hormone responds. The short version: eating slowly and chewing well is associated with a stronger response from the gut hormones tied to fullness.
What is GLP-1?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone your small intestine releases when you eat. It does two main things:
- Promotes fullness: it signals your brain that you’ve had enough, helping curb appetite.
- Smooths out blood sugar: it supports insulin release and helps blunt post-meal glucose spikes.
In other words, GLP-1 sits at the center of post-meal satisfaction — it touches both appetite and blood sugar. Newer weight-loss drugs amplify GLP-1’s effect pharmacologically, but research shows the way you eat can shift your own natural response too.
Eating slowly is linked to higher GLP-1 and PYY
In a study of healthy men, researchers had participants eat the same meal in 5 minutes versus over 30 minutes. When they ate slowly, their post-meal levels of the fullness-related gut hormones GLP-1 and PYY were significantly higher (Kokkinos et al., 2010).
Same food, same amount — yet simply changing the pace changed the hormone response. It’s a striking illustration of why how you eat matters, not just what.
Chewing more appears to matter too
Other research zeroed in on chewing. Comparing 15 chews per bite with 40 chews per bite, the 40-chew group ate less, had lower levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, and showed higher GLP-1 afterward (Li et al., 2011).
Chewing more naturally stretches out the meal, giving fullness signals time to arrive. Both the act of chewing and the slower pace it creates seem to play a role in that stronger sense of fullness.
Simple ways to eat this way
- Put your utensils down between bites: your pace slows and your chew count climbs on its own.
- Be deliberate with the first bite: the start of a meal tends to set the tempo for the rest.
- Begin with soup or vegetables: it discourages rushing and lets fullness build.
